It looks funny and not so serious-shiny-and-polished-like-a-car-advertisment , and I think this is particularly important these days.

Even without the beard it is obvious FOSS because of the copyleft sign on it.
Some of my student friends also dislike the icon of FDroid and didn’t understood what the brown thing is.

Also, the robot without the beard has a rectangular head, which is bound to alienate people with round heads.
Wait, just to explain you, CiaranG: beard is an homage to Stallman, ‘couse FDroid fully respect FSF philosophy. There’s no sexism reasons.
Sorry, but I can’t look at the icon. I love Stallman for all he stands for. But the way he wears facial hair has nothing to do with that. You want to avoid modern chic? This is a really cool idea. But I’m afraid it does not make icon creation easier, but more difficult. Maybe better settle for less and have something that is nice to look at?

I think a female F-Droid mascot would be a great idea. The icons right now are kind of gender-ambiguous, which means that they’re seen as male. I’m not sure how to make them seem feminine except by making them pink or magenta, though, which (while I love magenta) is horribly stereotypical.
