I saw Vudroid app here but no EbookDroid which is actually new version of Vudroid.

Unlike Vudroid on which it is based, this project includes an UnRAR library, which isn’t free software. (also its license is not GPL-compatible)

Unrar can be replaced with GPL version (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unrar for variants) or patched away. But the app appears to be something like the best ebook reader now (not without own issue though).

In contradiction of the stated license, which expressly permits it, the author has explicitly expressed on several occasions that he does not want anyone to compile and distribute binaries of this software.

As such (and even if the other issue which makes this non-free software is resolved) I think his wishes should be respected, and I don’t intend to include it unless someone wants to fork and rename it.

I’m trying to communicate with them, to understand if there’s some technical issues with F-Droid’s packages they don’t like and see if they’re resolvable (essentially, we discuss that in Patching/versioning policy thread). The app itself is good and actively developed, so it’s that case when it’s worth to do just that, instead of forking, etc. Of course, I still can only try, as time permits…

This software is copylefted and is derived from copylefted sources. So { non-free / wishes } word aren’t proper here.

As far as I understood they have now switched to using an external unrar binary. This should resolve all licensing issues for us.

Can someone check if the existance of this binary is required to use ebookdroid for regular (non-rared) files? If not, we should be able to use vanilla builds. If yes, I would contact them again and ask them to kindly provide a compile-time-flag to deactivate those checks.

You can see that there are almost 300 apps that are “held”. In other words, not every app that says it is FOSS can be allowed in our app store. Please look at the wiki and the forums to see what kind of apps are allowed
