GNU IceCat is the GNU version of the Firefox browser. Its main advantage is an ethical one: it is entirely free software. While the Firefox source code from the Mozilla project is free software, they distribute and recommend non-free software as plug-ins and addons. Also their trademark license restricts distribution in several ways incompatible with freedom 0.

This software includes several privacy protection features, detailed in the official website:

This month IceCat 31.5.0 has been released, including packages for Android 2.3 or newer:

GnuZilla Icecat for Android is still a bit unstable as I tested (very slow and fails to load some content)

* FTP download of language packs doesn’t work.

* Language packs (.xpi) are not compatible with icecatmobile-31.6.0.en-US.android-arm.apk

Is it stable yet? Should we wait for icecat based on esr38?

Side node: Torbrowser/Orfox is yet antoher mozilla-based offspring that might find its way to fdroid. Sigh.. we really should think about maintainability..

Why GNU IceCat (or IceWeasel) is not in F-droid?

I found just Firefox, and with a warning about it being dropped at anytime.

I have tested the latest version of GNU Icecat available at http://ftp.gnu.org. It is considerably faster than the previous version. I would say that it is as fast as the normal Firefox browser. I would love to have it included in F-Droid, replacing Firefox. If it is difficult to build, perhaps the gnuzilla developers would be willing to help.

Hoping to get an “fdroid build” working against the gnuzilla source tarball (gnu-1) at https://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/gnuzilla/38.6.0/.
