Reddit browser based on the last open source version of the excellent ‘Reddit is Fun’ browser by Andrew Shu. Diode provides quick and easy access to Reddit on your Android device complete with login, commenting and submissions.
The origin if this fork is silly: to keep a Gpl Reddit is fun 1.3.0 in the proprietary Play Store. The Reddit is fun in the Play Store (v2.4) is not Gpl. That has been rewritten with third party contributions replaced so as to comply with the GPLv3. The original author has reaped the goodwill from having a foss license on v1.3 and used it to boost another, non free app with the same name. That was probably not his motive, but that’s how it has worked out. And since there can’t be two similar apps with the same name, Reddit is Fun Gpl Edition had to get a rebranding. Out of respect for the Gpl, Diode should be called Reddit is Fun and vice versa. If this gets merged we will have two identical apps under different names. Let’s wait instead until Diode travels a bit further before including it.
Interestingly, the man behind Diode (and Lock Pattern Generator) is developing a Foss repo, under Gnu AGpl. He hasn’t explained why he couldn’t work to make F-droid better, only that his application will be “fully featured as compared to f-droid” with “future bitcoin integration for commerce”.
