First, TextSecure is using private repositories and is depending on proprietary Google Play Service for push messages. There was development to replace this and/or to at least not depend on it, which I haven’t checked recently. However, even apps which don’t depend on proprietary libraries, like their Flock contacts & calendar app, are not available in F-Droid due OpenWhisperSystems ordered us to take them down. Yes, we are not legally bound to do so, but upstream has all the power to change its apps so maintaing it on out side is either difficult or impossible.
The reasoning behind this is basically a security concern, which — while I respect moxies expertise on this field — I leave for you to decide on your own. For reference, I include some links. There is also some ongoing work on reproducable builds that might allow us to distribute the official binaries, when they match our builds, but it’s a) not ready yet and b) up to OWS to decide if this is an option for them.
Alright, so I see there are actually a lot of problems. I wish there was more solidarity with whisper systems, and I wish they weren’t as hostile to this repository as they are, especially considering the fact that they made the decision to release all of their products as free software.
